His attempt to ‘live without labels’ is so soaked in privilege that you just want to shake him… or walk away from the book. Rafe is probably one of the most annoying characters I’ve ever encountered in a teen book. He wants to go somewhere that no one knows he is gay, so he won’t have to deal with overly cheery PFLAG parents asking him about getting a boyfriend or students at his school like his soccer team making pledges not to use homophobic language. Calling the premise of Openly Straight a bit of a stretch is like saying water is a bit wet but it still stands : Rafe is an openly gay teen about to start his junior year who has decided to switch schools and attend a boarding school across the country because his school and family are too accepting of him being gay.
